Menorrhagianow more commonly called heavy menstrual bleedingis more than an inconvenient period with terrible timing. It can mean changing protection every hour, waking repeatedly at night, canceling plans, and wondering whether leaving the house requires a suitcase full of supplies. It can also cause iron deficiency, anemia, exhaustion, and other health problems.

- Ferritin or iron studies: Evaluate the body’s iron stores.

Aspirin can increase bleeding and should not be casually substituted.
Hormonal Treatments

The effects on fertility, pregnancy safety, recovery, and the possibility of needing additional treatment should be discussed before any procedure. Endometrial ablation is not contraception; pregnancy afterward can be dangerous, so reliable pregnancy prevention remains important.
When Heavy Bleeding Needs Urgent Care
Seek urgent medical help for extremely heavy bleeding accompanied by fainting, severe dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, a racing heartbeat, or marked weakness. Bleeding that soaks at least one pad or tampon every hour for more than two consecutive hours also warrants prompt medical advice, particularly when symptoms of blood loss are present.

There is no moral prize for enduring the most bleeding with the fewest complaints.
Menorrhagia is treatable, and improvement may involve controlling blood loss, restoring iron, treating a structural condition, or coordinating gynecologic and hematologic care. The experience becomes more manageable when symptoms are documented, concerns are taken seriously, and treatment reflects the patient’s goals. A heavy period should not be allowed to become the unpaid manager of someone’s calendar.
